In this post, we will be taking a look at the best cat food for ferrets on the market. It is relatively common for ferret owners to feed their ferret a food designed for another animal rather than a specifically designed ferret food.
The majority of cat foods fall short of providing a sufficient nutritional profile for your ferret. Kitten food is slightly better but we have researched the cat food market and found the three cat food products below that are suitable for ferrets. Each of these products will be covered in greater detail later in the article.

What To Look For In A Cat Food For Ferrets
The main reason that cat foods are unable to supply a satisfactory nutritional profile for your ferret is usually due to too little protein and too much fat. Although fat is the essential energy source for your ferret too much fat content in its diet can lead to ill health. Additional reasons include cat foods having either dairy or vegetable protein substitutes in them rather than real meat sources. Some also contain peas as a filler ingredient as well as having a fiber profile that is too high for your ferret.
If you choose to use a cat food that is not one from this article then we recommend that you ensure that its nutrient profile meets the below profile:-
- At least 30 percent protein.
- At least 15 percent fat.
- No more than 5 percent fiber.
If the metrics are slightly under the above recommendations then you can look for other suitable foods for ferrets to supplement that area.
The Best Cat Food For Ferrets
- 50 percent protein.
- 22 percent fat.
- 2.5 percent fiber.
It’s main three ingredients are herring, salmon, and white fish meal giving its high protein content from real meat sources. That said, one of its lower profile ingredients is pea that can be bad for ferrets. Although some ferret owners may choose to disregard the product due to this, we feel the rest of its potential benefits out weight the use of pea.
Although the Evo brand has developed an excellent reputation over the years it has been bought out by Proctor and Gambel whos pet food brands were then bought out by mars inc. To date, they have not changed any ingredients in the food mix and continue to produce an excellent product.

The Second Best Cat Food For Ferrets

The three main ingredients are chicken meal, deboned chicken, and deboned turkey. Agin, this cat food does contain a small amount of pea but in our opinion, the rest of its nutritional profile more than makes up for it.
